LA Galaxy and England midfielder David Beckham says he would relish the challeng
In an exclusive interview in the October issue of FourFourTwo magazine, available now, the former England captain reveals he has no plans to become a manager upon his retirement – “I don’t want to be a manager. I’ll never be a manager” – but that the idea of club ownership is one that appeals. “I always like to challenge myself,” says Beckham, “and I always like to have different things to look forward to in life. There are different things I’d like to be a part of and if that means being an owner of a franchise or a club, then of course, I’d like to.” And the former England skipper refused to rule out the possibility of using his wealth of experience in the game to help appoint prospective managers and/or players once he is embedded in the hot seat. “I’ve never been in that position before,” he continues,” “but it’s something that, maybe, is a possibility.” With England soon to face Andorra and Croatia in their opening 2010 World Cup qualifiers, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder says he is confident the Three Lions can banish the horrors of failing to qualify for Euro 2008 and even emulate perennial underachievers Spain in finally winning a major tournament again. “We went to the World Cup in Germany believing that we could go all the way,” reveals Beckham. “Everybody was really hyped up for it, we had great players, the team had matured. People had talked about it being our year and maybe we listened to that a bit too much. “We didn’t play well and didn’t deserve to go any further. It’s like Spain, people have always said that they have talented players, but they never get past the quarter-finals. They’ve now proved people wrong, so now it’s about time that we did the same, and hopefully we can do that with Fabio Capello.” Having lost to Croatia twice in qualifying for the 2008 European Championships, England come face to face with Slaven Bilic’s men again in the race for South Africa, but despite admitting his country are again placed in a taxing group, Beckham admits there can be no excuses for a second successive failure. “We need to qualify and if we fail again it will be a disaster,” he says. “Not qualifying for Euro 2008 was devastating for the country. I think people from other countries also miss England fans in big tournaments, and the Euros without England fans was strange. That can’t happen again. To get to a World Cup you’ve got to beat the best, but I’m confident we can do it.” The full interview with Beckham – in which he talks about his move to the United States, the quality of the MLS, his return to the national side and who his favourite England manager has been during his playing career – is in the new issue of FourFourTwo magazine, on sale now.
