HD-DVD format Officially Launched
Toshiba is the first of the electronics giants to hit retail with a next-gen DVD player. The Toshiba HD-A1 is the first of two models Toshiba has ready to launch. Retailing at $499.99, the HD-A1 is available today and is a somewhat stripped down version of the forthcoming HD-XA1, which will be priced at $799.99. Key differences between the two models include the HD-XA1's 4 DSP engines for audio output, 2 front mounted USB ports, stabilizing feet, heavier chassis, and multiple user interfaces. Just as important as the hardware, the first round of HD-DVD releases hit retail today. Universal and Warner are the first out of the gates, and together have 4 HD-DVD movies ready for launch. Universal is offering the cult-hit Serenity, while Warner Brothers has 3 titles ready to go: The Last Samurai, Million Dollar Baby, and Phantom of the Opera. IGN hit the street earlier today to see what the availability situation for the Toshiba HD-A1 and movies was on this first day of official launch. In short, Best Buy stores got 3 each, and if you're lucky there might still be some.
