Does framing art limit the opportunity of selling the art work?Does it not force the customer to see the art and frame as a whole? Are they more likely to walk pass the piece if the frame is not of their taste and they can't see it suiting their furnishings/style?   I think it can to some degree - especially if the frame doesn't do anything to enhance the artwork (which can sometimes occur when people are trying to keep their framing costs down). However if the frame enhances the work and helps to highlight the piece even more then I think people see it as part of the artwork and buy according to whether they like the artwork its self.   I get most of my paintings framed, by a guy who really knows what he is doing, everypainting he has framed enchances the painting, he has been framing pictures for a long time and certainly knows whats what, his prices are very reasonable , he will explain why he choses the frames he does for a particular painting, and yes I think someone might be put off if the wrong frame is on a painting, so I think I am lucky to have this guy frame my work.   Hopefully it shouldn't matter if the frame and art are seen as a whole, as the frame should compliment the art. This includes the genre and style of art. I couldn't imagine some bold modern art being in a gold gilt frame - that is more suited to a dramatic painting of Odin or something. People searching for an Odin painting would usually have an interior that matches that style, self-consciously chosen by them. I think most of the new houses built these days (house and land packages) are such modern interiors and suit either gallery wrap paintings or modern frames i.e. flat black and stuff.I think selling art that is not ready to hang, could limit a buyer, unless with the price of the painting comes a choice of frames that they can choose from and the painting comes delivered ready to hang (as I would think people would like the easier option rather than taking the painting themselves to a framer and then dying at the price heheh)
